The series in which this succeeded perhaps most impressively is that of his images of Place Blanche in the red light district of Pigalle in Paris, where he began to photograph transvestites and transsexuals in the mid-1950´s. When he traveled to Paris in the late 1950’s, Strömholm befriended the transsexual women who worked the streets in the Place Blanche, and they allowed him to photograph them.
